"I was lost, but now I'm found": 10 Greatest Underrated Albums.
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 6:21 am - BlackFrancis
People now-a-days either love the bull shit out there in the music world or loath it....musical marmite if you will.

So here is a list I have complied of underrated or lost albums from back in the day. So you will be be discovering new music, but good music from years gone by...

1. 'Marquee Moon' by Television.

The Album That Time Forgot: Released in 1977, it was actually a critically praised, but the sales didn't match.
Its a wonderful record. Each member of the band plays for their lives...perfect interlocking guitars that kicks the ass of any overblown metal duo.

Essential Listening: 'Marquee Moon', 'See No Evil'.

2. 'Hunky Dory' by David Bowie

Bowie of course went onto becoming one of the greatest artists ever, but for me this is the start of the greatness...made vaguely famous for its single 'Life on Mars?', but the album as a whole is utter brilliance, and often overlooked and overshadowed by other albums.

Essential Lisenting: 'Life on Mars?', 'Bombers' (B-side).

3. 'Bone Machine' by Tom Waits.

A brilliant album by one of the most original artist of the last 40 years.

Essential Listening: 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up', 'Earth Died Screaming'.

4. 'Milestones' by Miles Davis.

Yes its Jazz...but come back, its actually good. Overshadowed by Kind of Blue.

Essential Listening: 'Milestones', 'Dr. Jackle'.

5. 'Surrealistic Pillow' by Jefferson Airplane.

They may have gone on to make shitty 80s synth pop as Starship, but this record its a psychedelic masterpiece.

Essential Listening: 'White Rabbit', 'Somebody to Love'.

6. 'Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky. Mick and Tich' by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky. Mick and Tich.

The band that invented hard rock...in 1967. Funny name, Brilliant music.

Essential Listening: 'Hold Tight!', 'The Legend of Xanadu'.

7. 'Tonight's the Night' by Neil Young.

The Godfather of Flannel shirts release a beautiful tribute to his two friends, Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and Young's friend and roadie Bruce Berry who died young.

Essential Listening: 'Tonight's the Night', 'Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown'.

8. 'For Emma, Forever Ago' By Bon Iver.

Though a fairly new record it was still very much over looked. Basically a man mending his woes through great acoustic music.

Essential Listening: 'Skinny Love', 'Flume'.

9. '2112' by Rush.

Often disregared as cheesey Prog rock, but this ain't no f*cking Yes record, its a spacey masterpiece of high pitched voices, complex drumming, exotic guitars and funky basslines....

Essential Listening: '2112', 'Passage to Bangkok'

10. 'Fleet Foxes' by Fleet Foxes.

Again, relatively new, but yet again overlooked by the other bollocks. Its a great mixture of medieval folk with Simon and Garfunkel Melodies.

Essential Listening: 'Your Protector', 'White Winter Hymnal'.

You may well be right about Davey Davis, but that Intro of Hold Tight is utter genius.

I think you'll find that Mr Dave Davies invented hard rock! I love that bit in Deathproof where they dicuss DDDBM&T and say that Pete Townshend 'almost quit The Who' to join DDDBM&T... Tarantino rarely gets his facts wrong but he was WAY off on this one!
