Why no love in the U.S. for KOL?

I read a couple articles today in 2 different magazines: People and Rolling Stone, respectively. First off, I realize there are quite a few fans here in the U.S....but I don't get why it pales in comparison to their reception overseas. In People, they comment that 'Because of the Times' was a "disappointment". What kind of shit is that? I don't know anything about the writers or editors at People, but they must be completely out of touch with music and think it's some kind of lame popularity contest. In RS, one of the topics was how KOL top the charts and have record-setting album sales in Europe, Great Britain and Ireland but nowhere near that kind of impact in America. Despite this information, I am obviously still an avid fan. I just don't get why America hasn't embraced the band like it should be. Guess it just goes to show that a lot of times the best in music isn't received as it should be in this country.
